Seneca Rocks — West Virginia
Looking up at the unique rock formation that is Seneca Rocks. The large crag rises 900 feet from the surrounding West Virginia countryside, deep within the Allegheny Mountains. The area is rich with Appalachian culture and history. The rugged Allegheny Mountains create a natural barrier in the early days of westward expansion. Although native tribes lived in the area for centuries, it was considered frontier country when the first Europeans ventured beyond its ridges in the mid-1700s.

Nevada Sunfire — Nevada
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area in Southern Nevada. The late afternoon sunlight revealed such vibrant colors and patches of deep shadows. Although this photo may not provide many hints as to how hot it was but temperatures soared to 100° on this day.

Hurricane River - Michigan
The mouth of the Hurricane River where it spills into Lake Superior at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This remote section of the shoreline is located near the small town of Grand Marais. The shoreline is often referred to as the “shipwreck coast” of Michigan. The Au Sable Point reef is a shallow sandstone feature, only 6 feet beneath the surface in places, and extends nearly a mile out into Lake Superior. Violent storms, thick fog and underwater hazards made this area one of the most dangerous shorelines to navigate in North America during the 1800s.

Santa Elena Canyon - Texas & Mexico Border
The Rio Grande flows through the Santa Elena Canyon at Big Bend National Park. In this photo, the cliffs to the left are in the Mexican state of Chihuahua while the cliffs on the right are in the United States. The river was shallow enough to walk across the borderline.

Razorback - West Virginia
The view from atop Seneca Rocks in Pendleton County, West Virginia. This impressive razorback ridge formation in the Allegheny Mountains extends upwards 900 feet from the surrounding terrain. I carefully shuffled out onto a portion of the outcropping and sat there, like a rider in a saddle, to take this photo. What an awesome sight to behold in person.

Gitche Gumee - Michigan
Large rock formation along the Pictured Rocks National Shoreline in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Located between the towns of Munising and Grand Marais, the Pictured Rocks rise from Lake Superior to a height of 200 feet in some places. The colorful streaks are formed by the minerals within the rocks leaching out over time. Groundwater evaporates, leaving streaks of red from iron, black and white from manganese, yellow from limonite and pinks and greens from copper. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s “Hiawatha” poem references the lake as “the shining Big-Sea-Water”.

Valley of Fire — Nevada
The arid, rocky terrain of the Valley of Fire - Located in Southern Nevada, roughly an hour from Las Vegas, this area is full of geological wonders but I was drawn to this view and how the shadows played on the scenery. The valley is part of the Mojave Desert and is well known for its hot, dry weather. The day this photograph was made was no exception to those norms as the temperature rose to 100° before the sun lowered itself on the horizon.

Lonesome Tree — New Mexico
A lonesome yet resilient tree carved out its existence in the arid gypsum dunes of White Sands National Park in New Mexico. The poignancy of its locale is what attracted me to capture this photo. It felt like I was taking a portrait of the tree. Although the tree is relatively small, for all I know, it could actually be quite old. It can sometimes be hard to distinguish these sort things in desert regions. It is a Rio Grande Cottonwood tree.
