Hurricane River - Michigan

The mouth of the Hurricane River where it spills into Lake Superior at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This remote section of the shoreline is located near the small town of Grand Marais. The shoreline is often referred to as the “shipwreck coast” of Michigan. The Au Sable Point reef is a shallow sandstone feature, only 6 feet beneath the surface in places, and extends nearly a mile out into Lake Superior. Violent storms, thick fog and underwater hazards made this area one of the most dangerous shorelines to navigate in North America during the 1800s.
