Big Sur — California

The Santa Lucia Mountains rise dramatically from the Pacific Ocean, creating the rugged coastline that defines California's Big Sur region. Stretching for roughly 70 miles, the drive along the Pacific Coast Highway through Big Sur is widely regarded as one of the most scenic drives in the United States, if not the world. This view looks south along the coastline near Bixby Creek, where towering cliffs, rolling mountains, and the Pacific Ocean combine to form one of California's most iconic landscapes. To capture this photo, a friend and I climbed a small rise just south of Bixby Bridge. The short scramble was well worth it, giving us a vantage point that perfectly showcases the meeting of the mountains and the sea.
