The Shores of Gitche Gumee - Pictures Rocks National Shoreline on Lake Superior near Munising, Michigan
“By the shores of Gitche Gumee,
By the shining Big-Sea-Water...”
I remember my dad reading that to me when I was a child. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote “The Song of Hiawatha” and chose The Pictured Rocks of Lake Superior as the setting for the story. I had never seen a fresh water lake with such large waves. The cliffs were impressive and showed the remnants of mineral deposits over the years. The clouds in the sky above looked more like those in a painting than real life. The sun was beating down but it was cool outside. The boat swayed back and forth with the rolling of the waves.
